Kroma Studios
Kroma opened for business in 1970, in Malibu, California with about a dozen stained glass windows, mobiles, platters and mirrors-all made of dichroic glass. No one had ever seen, let alone heard of this "magical" material. And it took a long time and a lot of explanation before a reasonably large customer base developed. Then, word of mouth took over, the glass was just too exciting. Then the group upgraded from their small shop in Malibu to a large workshop/gallery in Venice, California. Business was good, but soon got even better as Rupama joined the show. She introduced the first line of Dichroic jewelry. Once again it took time and quite a bit of clarification, but finally the glass came to be nationally accepted as a striking and unusual art material. They moved their studio to Santa Fe, New Mexico in the early '90's and there they developed their line of "KROMASTONES"
Dichroic coatings are produced on a variety of glass materials. Originally developed as interference filters in scientific measuring and correction applications, they are a product of the technology called "thin film physics."
The coatings are quite thin, about 700 angstroms, and are generally constructed of silicone and titanium oxides evenly shuffled into multiple layers. These layers are applied by vacuum deposition and cause the glass to become a partial mirror by allowing only a select narrow band of light to transmit; other rays are rejected through reflection and absorption.
